Innovative 200 MW solar thermal project to provide energy on demand

SolarReserve, a U.S. developer of large-scale solar power projects, recently announced it has received its final 1041 Permit from the Saguache County Board of County Commissioners for its two 100 megawatt solar thermal energy facilities. The project is located on private agricultural land about six miles northeast of the Town of Center in Saguache County, Colorado. When completed, each facility will supply approximately 450,000 megawatt hours annually of clean, reliable electricity - enough to power a total of more than 140,000 homes during peak electricity periods.

Heavy duty gas turbines surpass 2 million fired hours

GE’s fleet of 47 heavy duty gas turbines operating on low British thermal unit fuels has accumulated more than 2 million fired hours. Low BTU, or low calorific value fuels have significantly less heating values than natural gas. Examples include syngas, steel mill gases and dilute natural gas. These fuels are lighter than natural gas and have less energy per unit volume.

H-class gas turbines to power combined cycle plant in South Korea

Siemens is supplying  two innovative SGT6-8000H gas turbines, one steam turbine, three generators, and two heat recovery steam generators to South Korea, this time for a gas fired facility. The order is worth more than EUR300 million and the company is responsible for the the entire instrumentation and control technology at the Ansan combined cycle power plant (CCPP).

Users of aeroderivative gas turbines converge at California meet

The annual Western Turbine Users Inc. (WTUI) conference took place recently in Pasadena, California. There were about 900 participants, mostly users of GE LM2500, LM500, LM6000 and LMS100 aeroderivative gas turbines. Such events allow users to hear from their peers and quiz the OEM on issues concerning their facilities.

Co-generation plant in Australia to be powered by J612 gas engine

One of GE’s natural gas-fired Jenbacher J612 gas engines will be powering a co-generation plant that will provide reliable electricity and thermal energy for a major urban revitalization initiative in Dandenong, Victoria, Australia. Built by Cogent Energy, the plant will play a pivotal role in the VicUrban-lead Revitalising Central Dandenong (RCD) initiative that is rejuvenating the south-east region of Melbourne.

Saudi Arabia’s PP10 combined cycle expansion to boost output

GE has received a contract for nearly $200 million to supply steam turbine technology, power generation services and distributed control systems for the conversion of Saudi Electricity Company’s (SEC) PP10 power plant from simple to combined-cycle operation. The project will add 1,300 megawatts to the plant’s capacity, to support the growing power requirements of Saudi Arabia’s central region and help the Kingdom meet summer peak demands.

550 MW gas-fired plant at Ninemile to save $ 53 million per year

The Shaw Group Inc. recently announced it received full notice to proceed on a new dual fuel combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant at Entergy’s Ninemile Point Steam Electric Station near New Orleans, La. The 550-megawatt unit at Ninemile is scheduled to begin commercial operations by the first part of 2015. The cost to construct the unit is currently estimated at $721 million and is expected to provide significant economic benefits to Jefferson Parish and its adjoining communities.

LNG back in the spotlight

If the presentations at this year's event held in Florence, Italy are anything to go by, LNG is right back in the spotlight. In particular, floating oil production, storage and offloading (FPSO) technology was showcased. GE has just gained an order for an FPSO platform being built to develop the Guará Norte section of the Tupi oilfield in Brazil's Santos oil basin.
