IIR

The U.S. power business underwent dramatic changes in 2011 that will shape tens of billions of dollars of fuel, construction and maintenance work for years to come. In the U.S., Industrial Info Resources (IIR) is tracking 267 new-build generation projects with combined generating capacity of about 24.3 gigawatts (GW) that are scheduled to kick off in 2011. These projects represent $51 billion in total investment value (TIV).

Siemens Russia

RusTurboMash LLC, a joint venture of Siemens Energy and Iskra-Avigaz, inaugurated a new compressor manufacturing plant in the Russian city of Perm. Siemens holds a 51 percent stake in the joint venture and Iskra-Avigaz the rest. The combined investment of the two companies is EUR60 million. The initial plan in the upcoming months is to gradually start with the production of stator components for small compressors. By late 2012, the plant is expected to produce complete compressors. This will create as many as 250 jobs.

FlexEfficiency

 

GE and Toshiba Corporation of Japan are bringing GE’s FlexEfficiency gas turbine technology to Japan and other key countries in Asia. The two comanies have agreed to mutually promote new combined-cycle power plants with 9FB gas turbines incorporating GE’s FlexEfficiency technology and Toshiba’s steam turbine-generators for projects in Japan and other Asian countries, as agreed upon by GE and Toshiba.

Mechanology Inc. of Attleboro, MA. is selling its steam turbine business at a sealed bid sale on November 18, 2011. Mechanology's single stage, radially split design incorporates a proprietary nozzle block and steam path designed and manufactured to the customer's specific steam conditions. This permits the designers to maximize the efficiency of the turbine in each application. The N-Series steam turbines offer numerous mechanical enhancements with an emphasis on durability, high efficiency and reliable performance.

LPP Combustion, LLC's technology for vaporizing a wide variety of liquid fuels into a natural gas-equivalent LPP Gas has logged 1000 operating hours on a commercial combustion turbine that is generating electricity while connected to the local utility grid.  Fourteen different liquid fuels including bio-ethanol, naphtha, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and biodiesel were used to produce power during the 1000 hours of operation.  No alterations were made to the dry, low NOx combustion system on the turbine.

The Bahrain based Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Marketing Services Company (ASRY) and the British power generation packager specialist Centrax Ltd., have formed the joint venture company, ASRY-CENTRAX Ltd.

The joint venture is set to equip a  multi-application power barge using twin Rolls-Royce Trent 60 aeroderivative gas turbine powered generator sets with the aim of becoming a leading player in the production of barge mounted power stations. This will extend the range of power products offered by Centrax.

Industrial Clutch, Waukesha, WI, has introduced the Model HC/CH clutch designed for use in marine applications including drawworks, winches and propulsion. The HC/CH clutch features a patent-pending key seal that allows for the use of standard O-rings and improves the ease of installation in current configurations using a double keyway and single drilled actuation hole. This innovative key seal simplifies the sealing process and minimizes the possibility of damage to expensive seal arrangements.

Several user discussion groups took place during the 40th Turbomachinery Symposium in Houston, Texas. For example, one was held on the subject of centrifugal pump operation, maintenance and reliability. Few users, it turned out, were conducting risk-based analysis.

The 40th Turbomachinery Symposium is taking place this week in Houston, Texas. They keynote was delivered by Joe Gregory, General Manager of Major Capital Projects within Chevon’s Deepwater Exploration and Projects Business Unit. He discussed the technology needs of for deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. His company is working on the development of fields in the Miocene and Lower Tertiary strata at depths of 7000 feet and beyond – in some cases as much as 16,000 feet.
