Japan's Toshiba Corp. recently said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with U.S. conglomerate General Electric Co. to form a global strategic alliance that the two companies would jointly develop select combined cycle power generation projects globally. The companies will also explore the formation of a strategic joint venture for the development of next-generation combined-cycle power projects having higher levels of thermal efficiency.
GE Oil & Gas recently won a contract worth more than US $500 million to supply turbomachinery equipment and services to Petrobras, a deep-water oil production company. The contract will serve the four new floating production, storage and offloading units (FPSOs P-74, P-75, P-76 and P-77) in the Cessão Onerosa region of the Santos Basin pre-salt fields, in the state of Sao Paulo.
A computer virus attacked a turbine control system at a U.S. power company last fall when a technician unknowingly inserted an infected USB computer drive into the network, keeping a plant off line for three weeks, according to a report posted on a U.S. government website.
The ASME Gas Turbine India show in Mumbai showcased a presentation on Mobil DTE 932 GT by James Hannon, industrial lubricants technical advisor for ExxonMobil, in which the company’s new low-varnish turbine oil solution came to the fore.

It is an established fact that the contractor will prepare the bid tabulation and present it to the end user for acceptance. However, the contractor bid is usually nothing more than a scope of supply list, and not a true comparison of the offered equipment.
There are four basic function classifications of rotating equipment – driven equipment (compressors, pumps, extruders, mixers and fans), drivers or prime movers that provide power (steam turbines, gas turbines, motors and engines), transmission devices (gears, clutches and couplings) and auxiliary equipment (lube and seal systems, buffer gas systems and cooling systems).
Axial gas turbine technology is the dominant and appropriate configuration for large gas turbines. Major power plants and industrial plants deploy axial gas turbines to provide power and heat for district heating, process, facilities and electricity to the grid. Less discussed, though, are the lower power ranges where both axial and radial gas turbines are available. It is worthwhile to compare axial and radial turbines where the technologies overlap.
Suppliers often differ on the best way to control turbomachinery. Some advocate plant-wide controls operated by Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), while others opt for proprietary black box or software-based solutions.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has concluded an agreement with United Technologies Corporation (UTC) of the U.S., under which MHI will acquire Pratt & Whitney Power Systems (PWPS), the small and medium-size gas turbine business unit of Pratt & Whitney (P&W), an aero-engine manufacturer.
The Cidade de Angra dos Reis MV22, a production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel owned by Petrobras, is operating in over 2,000 meters of water above the Tupi Field in the Pacific Ocean. It has to process a mixture of natural gas and CO2 in operating pressures that exceed 500 bar.
Steam and gas turbines were first developed for power generation – a pioneer industry in many aspects – and then adapted for mechanical drive applications such as compressor or pump drive services. As a result, many well-known gas turbine mechanical drive models have been adapted from power generation.
Algeria has set aside $1.06 billion towards setting up a 1,200 MW combined cycle power plant in the northeastern town of Ain Amat. The contract has been awarded to a South Korean consortium, and the deal is expected to ease the North African country's acute power shortage, according to consortium member Daewoo International.
Plant machinery safety and reliability begins during the project phase. Input from lessons learned and incorporation of the resulting best practices into the earliest phase of the project will ensure a plant that it enjoys optimum safety and reliability for its usable life.

A strong fourth quarter in fiscal 2012 has enabled the German manufacturer Siemens to fulfill expectations and achieve one of the best years ever, according to Peter Löscher, President and CEO of Siemens AG. The company has achieved a seven percent gain in revenue and a strong profit in the fourth quarter.
The gas turbine marketplace will undergo significant changes in the decade between 2012 and 2021, according to Forecast International. The biggest gains will be in the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) space where the current global total of $7.8 billion is expected to double within 10 years.
New regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the low price of natural gas were the two most powerful forces affecting current and planned U.S. coal-fired generation in 2012 and 2013. At this point, we see both forces continuing to shape coal generation over the next few years.
Dresser-Rand has entered into a service agreement with NuScale Power, LLC.
The agreement allows for an integrated delivery model that includes design, engineering, U.S.-based manufacturing, and operational support from Dresser-Rand’s worldwide service center network. The goal is to ensure optimum performance of the turbine generators that will be paired with NuScale Power’s small modulator reactors (SMR).
Below is a case study from the paper, \"Babbitted bearing health assessment,\" by John Whalen of John Crane, Thomas Hess of Dupont Engineering, Jim Allen of Nova Chemicals, and Jack Craighton of Dupont Engineering at the 41st Turbomachinery Symposium in Houston, Texas.
The case study involves a large centrifugal compressor in charge gas service in an ethylene plant. The unit was running fine when a power outage shut the plant down. The train came down fine but when brought back up it was noted that one bearing exhibited high levels of vibration.
