GE supplying HA gas turbines for UAE combined cycle

GE and Sumitomo Corp. are teaming up to develop, build and operate a 1.8-GW combined cycle power plant in the United Arab Emirates, the companies announced Tuesday.

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with GE and Japan-based Sumitomo. The plant will feature three of GE’s HA gas turbines, three steam turbines, six generators and three heat recovery steam generators (HRSB).

GE also will supply turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the power plant in the UAE port city of Hamriyah, Sharjah. Sumitomo and GE Capital’s Energy Financial Services will partner with Shikoku Electric Power Co. and Sharjah Asset Management to form an equity consortium for the project.

They billed the project as the first independent combined cycle power plant in Sharjah. SEWA will buy power produced from the consortium under the long-term PPA.

GE will also supply parts, repairs and maintenance over the 25-year period. The company has maintained a relationhip with SEWA for several decades.
