The combined cycle power plant in Waad al-Shamal Mining City has started operating with a locally made GE 7F.05 gas turbine. GE is supplying four advanced GE 7F.05 heavy duty gas turbines and a GE steam turbine, and featuring solar innovation technology. Out of this one gas turbine will be locally manufactured. The 1,390 MW combined cycle plant will be able to provide the equivalent power needed to supply more than 500,000 Saudi homes. The solar component is 50 MW.

Saudi Electricity Company that owns the plant has invested more than SR3.75 billion in the solar power generating plant with solar powered mirrors. It has also invested in the construction of transmission stations and transmission lines to supply the mining city and its industrial projects with electricity.
