
Ansaldo Energia Wins Independent Hydrogen and HVO Certifications for GT36, AE94.3A
TÜV SÜD certified GT36's hydrogen readiness and DNV validated the AE94.3A on pure HVO, advancing Ansaldo Energia's fuel flexibility strategy.
Ansaldo Energia has secured two independent third-party certifications advancing the fuel flexibility of its gas turbine portfolio: TÜV SÜD certified the Hydrogen Readiness of the company's GT36 turbine, and DNV validated the AE94.3A's combustion system operating on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a liquid fuel produced from biological feedstocks, the company said.
GT36 Advances Toward Higher Hydrogen Concentrations
The Hydrogen Readiness certification issued by TÜV SÜD confirms the GT36's pathway toward operation with progressively higher hydrogen concentrations, a step in the turbine's roadmap toward 100% hydrogen capability. The GT36 is currently offered with hydrogen capability of up to 70% by volume.
AE94.3A Demonstrates Stable Combustion on Pure HVO
The second milestone concerns the AE94.3A gas turbine. During an independent witness-testing campaign conducted by DNV at the Sesta Lab facility in Radicondoli, Italy, Ansaldo Energia demonstrated stable operation of its hybrid liquid-fuel combustion system on HVO under conditions representative of actual turbine operation, with no flashback events or test trips across the full operating range.

"Hydrogen and low-carbon fuels provide practical pathways to reduce CO2 emissions while maximizing the value of existing assets and preserving the system stability services delivered by rotating equipment. The expertise we have developed can be applied both to new units and to the installed base through retrofit solutions."
Certifications Follow a Live Commercial Project
The HVO validation isn't purely theoretical. Ansaldo Energia has already sold an AE94.3A unit to SSE Thermal for the roughly 300-MW Tarbert power plant in Ireland, designed to run on 100% HVO from startup with an option for future conversion to hydrogen — giving the newly announced DNV validation a concrete commercial application already lined up ahead of the plant's entry into service.
