GE’s LM2500 gas turbine for German frigate

GE Marine recently announced that it will provide MTU with an LM2500 gas turbine for the German Navy’s third Baden-Württemberg-class (F125) frigate, as part of a CODLAG system including four diesel generating sets. The LM2500 gas turbine will be manufactured at GE’s Evendale facility and will be delivered to MTU in Friedrichshafen, Germany, in March 2013. The ship is expected to be launched in 2014, and commissioned by the German Navy in 2016.

Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine general manager said MTU has provided GE LM gas turbine packages for a variety of military and commercial marine applications, most recently to power the United States Coast Guard’s Bertholf-class cutters, and a newbuild high-speed yacht. GE LM2500s also power the German Navy’s Bremen- (F122), Brandenburg- (F123) and Sachsen-class (F124) frigates. .

Under the MSS agreement, MTU buys GE Marine LM gas turbines and installs them into MTU packages for integration into complete propulsion systems. For the F125 frigate project, one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets will be supplied in a combined diesel-electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion arrangement.
