The companies have entered a memorandum of understanding to advance Energy Dome’s CO2 storage system technology.

MAN Energy Solutions and Energy Dome have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to potentially integrate their respective technologies into Energy Dome’s CO2 battery technology. Energy Dome’s CO2 battery is a long-term energy storage (LDES) solution.

“Long-duration energy storage systems are vital to the success of the energy transition as they complement clean yet volatile renewable energies. Energy storage is lagging behind alternative energy production and preventing its widespread implementation,” said Matteo Falco, Head of Industries, Region Europe at MAN Energy Solutions. “Various technologies with different capacities and characteristics must be utilized to bridge this gap. This is why we are excited to embark on this new collaboration with Energy Dome. Together, we will leverage our collective strengths and expertise to accelerate the deployment of sustainable energy storage plants.”

The basis for the CO2 battery technology is a closed thermodynamic transformation of CO2 between the gaseous and liquid states. In the system’s charge mode, CO2 is derived from an atmospheric gasholder (the Dome) and compressed through a motor-driven inter-refrigerated compressor. The heat generated during the compression process is housed in a thermal energy storage system, while CO2 is liquefied and stored in pressurized vessels at ambient temperature.

Containing CO2 in this manner allows for energy storage at a high-density without atmospheric emissions and without the use of cryogenic temperatures. The Dome’s discharge mode heats up, evaporates, and imports CO2 into an expander as energy is needed—the processed gas is then transported back into the Dome. The expander powers the generator to produce carbon-free electricity for the grid.

“In order to shift to fully renewable and sustainable energy, we need efficient and cost-effective ways to store it,” said Claudio Spadacini, CEO of Energy Dome. “Our CO2 battery is a solution that will change how sustainable, long-duration energy storage is adopted, making it more accessible and impactful for communities worldwide. The combination of MAN Energy Solutions' turbomachinery with our battery design ensures that anyone considering the adoption of our technology solution can do so.”
