Ansaldo Energia is set to debut its MXL3 upgrade for GT26 gas turbines. The upgrade will be installed at ENGIE’s Maxima-Flevo combined cycle plant in spring 2023.
The upgrade aims to provide up to 25MW more gas turbine power output at an increased efficiency level of around 1.5%. Maintenance intervals will be extended to 40,000 equivalent operating hours, the same as Ansaldo Energia’s MXL2 upgrade. The MXL3 also allows users to switch between ‘performance’ and ‘maintenance cost’ modes.
The MXL3 will boost the present maximum output of Maxima-Flevo 5 combined cycle generation unit by up to 35 MW and will allow the plant to reach more than 60% efficiency.
The increase in efficiency could result in up to 40,000 tons of CO2 savings per year. MXL3 technology also allows for the co-firing of hydrogen up to 45% of volume flow, with no additional changes to the gas turbine hardware. ENGIE is evaluating opportunities to apply Ansaldo MXL3 technology to the GT26 of its European fleet.
