Arabelle Solutions Equips Poland’s First Nuclear Station with Steam Turbine Islands
Key Takeaways
- Arabelle Solutions will supply steam turbine and generator sets for Poland's first nuclear power plant, approved by Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe.
- The Choczewo project will feature advanced turbine technology and involve Polish suppliers, aligning with the "Buy Where We Build" philosophy.
Each half-speed steam turbine, featuring improved cycle efficiency, will be coupled to a hydrogen and water-cooled GIGATOP 4-pole generator synchronized to the 50-Hz Polish grid.
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Co.
“We are proud to partner with Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Co. to deliver the turbine hall equipment for the first nuclear power plant in Poland, contributing to providing reliable, low-carbon electricity to the country,” said Catherine Cornand, Chief Executive Officer, Arabelle Solutions. “This project reflects both the trust of our partners and the commitment of our teams to carry forward our long-standing expertise to meet the world’s growing energy needs.”
At the Choczewo nuclear power plant, each unit will contain a steam turbine and generator with auxiliary systems, in addition to equipment for the water-steam cycle:
- Condenser
- Moisture separator reheaters
- Low- and high-pressure feedwater heaters
- Feedwater tanks
- De-aerating tanks
“As a result of a transparent, competitive, and extremely demanding procurement process, a supplier of one of the largest components in the conventional part of our power plant was selected,” said Marek Woszczyk, President of the Management Board, PEJ. “The procurement process itself, in which PEJ participated, was based on the highest technical and quality standards. We have chosen a partner who guarantees experience, and above all reliability and a wide chain of suppliers—largely Polish.”
The shaftline of the half-speed steam turbine generator will be 68-meters-long and features a combined high/intermediate-pressure module and three double-flow, low-pressure modules for improved cycle efficiency. Each turbine will be coupled to a hydrogen and water-cooled GIGATOP 4-pole generator synchronized to the 50-Hz Polish grid. The turbine hall’s supply chain will include specialist providers from Poland.
“The choice of Arabelle Solutions for the project’s steam turbine generator is a strong complement to the AP1000 reactor,” said Dan Lipman, President of Westinghouse Energy Systems. “Having such a major European supplier involved in the project underscores Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium ‘Buy Where We Build’ philosophy and our commitment to having Polish companies participating throughout the entire project.”
Turbogenerator Refurbishment
In October 2025, Arabelle Solutions received a contract from S.N. Nuclearelectrica to
This refurbishment contract falls under Romania’s national program to extend the operational lifetime of Unit 1, which has been operational since 1996. Previously, Arabelle Solutions executed maintenance services for Unit 1 and Unit 2, including multi-year contracts to refurbish shaft line components. The Cernavoda plant in southeastern Romania is the country’s only nuclear facility and supplies approximately 20% of national electricity demand. Additionally, the contract supports Romania’s commitment to energy independence and nuclear energy as a foundation for the domestic energy mix and economic development.
