The new aircraft will support the Azerbaijani flag carrier's growth and enable the addition of new routes and increased inbound tourism capacity.
Boeing and Azerbaijan Airlines announced that the national flag carrier has ordered eight 787-8 Dreamliners to support the expansion of its long-haul fleet. The energy-efficient aircraft will enable the Central Asian airline to profitably introduce new routes from Azerbaijan and enhance inbound tourism capacity.
Jahangir Asgarov, President of Azerbaijan Airlines, and Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, celebrated the order during a signing ceremony at the airline's hub in Baku. In July 2022, Boeing and the carrier announced a commitment to purchase four 787s, which has since been finalized for eight airplanes and is unidentified on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries website.
Asgarov said the contract with Boeing for the acquisition of modern wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliners represents an essential step in modernizing the fleet and increasing Azerbaijan Airlines' air transportation level.
The 787 Dreamliner has over 85 customers worldwide ordering more than 1,600 units. Since its introduction in 2011, the 787 family has enabled airlines to open over 350 new nonstop routes, such as Azerbaijan Airlines' recent connection between Baku and New Delhi.
Deal stated that the 787 has positioned Azerbaijan Airlines as the leading carrier across Central Asia, with the airplane's flexibility and capability contributing to increased tourism and economic growth in Azerbaijan.
Constructed with lightweight composite materials and powered by advanced engines, the 787 Dreamliner can transport up to 20% more passengers while reducing fuel usage and emissions by 25% compared to its predecessors. The 787-8's range extends up to 13,530 km in a typical two-class configuration, allowing Azerbaijan Airlines to expand its network across Europe, Asia, and beyond.
Azerbaijan Airlines is among the largest carriers in Central Asia, serving 40 destinations in 25 countries with a fleet that includes Boeing 757, 767, and 787 aircraft.
