Capstone recently received an order for a C1000 microturbine to upgrade a solid waste treatment center in Tampere, Finland. Sarlin Oy Ab, Capstone's distributor for Finland, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania, secured the order, which is likely to be commissioned in early 2016. The turnkey project is the second major order for Sarlin Oy Ab within the last month.
Fueled by landfill biogas collected from two stations on-site, the C1000 microturbine will be installed in a combined heat and power (CHP) application along with a 1400 kW exhaust heat exchanger, booster, and automation and gas treatment systems. The system will convert organic solid waste into clean, renewable energy for the waste treatment facility, and the exhaust from the microturbine will be captured to provide thermal heat.
Without any need for oil, lubricants or coolants, the system will align with the company's environmental policy for waste prevention by improving waste recovery and recycling it to produce reliable on-site power. According to the 2013 renewable energy progress report by the European Commission of Energy, Finland is on target to meet its renewable energy source (RES) target of 38 percent by 2020, which is in compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive.
Jim Crouse, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Capstone Turbine said the progress being made in the global renewable energy market is indicative of a shift to renewable power production. He said, “We are proud to be at the forefront of this movement.”
