Hitachi Energy, Ansaldo Energia Sign MOU on Integrated Turbine and Grid Solutions for Data Centers
The memorandum pairs Ansaldo's gas turbines and generators with Hitachi Energy's grid equipment for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz markets.
Hitachi Energy and Ansaldo Energia signed a memorandum of understanding to develop and market integrated power solutions, according to a joint release issued from Zurich and Genoa.¹ The companies said the goal is to help customers secure reliable power faster, including at data centers.¹
What Each Company Brings
Ansaldo Energia would contribute its gas turbine and generator technology. Hitachi Energy would supply full grid system integration, spanning high-voltage equipment, transformers, automation and power electronics.¹ The companies said they intend to build solutions that cover generation through transmission to the point of consumption, including energy hubs, data centers and other large electricity consumers.¹
Hitachi Energy also said it aims to support autonomous, integrated data center operation by combining the offering with its HMAX Data Center product under the One Hitachi banner.¹
"Power demand is growing at a pace we have not seen for decades as the world enters the electricity era," said Andreas Schierenbeck, CEO of Hitachi Energy. "As power demand continues to outpace available infrastructure, the need for scalable, rapidly deployable power solutions has become increasingly urgent. By combining our complementary strengths with Ansaldo Energia, we help customers unlock new capacity, accelerate time to power, and build resilient energy systems that support economic growth and digital innovation."¹
Fabrizio Fabbri, CEO of Ansaldo Energia, said: "Meeting the world's growing demand for electricity requires closer collaboration across the entire energy value chain. By combining Ansaldo Energia's power generation technologies with Hitachi Energy's expertise in grid infrastructure, we will provide integrated solutions that accelerate deployment and deliver the scale, flexibility and reliability required by the next generation of industrial, digital and energy infrastructure."¹
Fit With Ansaldo's U.S. Push
The agreement follows Ansaldo's July order from Pacifico Energy for eight AE64.3A gas turbines, configured for 60 Hz, to power a Texas data center, with first deliveries due in 2027. Trade press described it as the company's return to the U.S. new-build market after more than three decades.² The release itself singles out the U.S. as the market where AI-driven demand is most acute.¹
For Hitachi Energy, the memorandum fits a pattern. A February Latitude Media profile reported that the company was already in talks with gas turbine manufacturers about a possible partnership, and that it had announced a $1 billion U.S. manufacturing investment.³ Hitachi has also teamed with investment firm X Labs on behind-the-meter energy parks for data centers, though that project's generation source was not specified.⁴
What Remains Undefined
The release gives no commercial terms, target projects, timeline or pilot customers, and it does not say whether buyers would sign one contract for a packaged offering or separate ones. Those details will determine whether the memorandum becomes a product or stays a statement of intent. For operators weighing behind-the-meter power, the question is whether a single integrated supplier can shorten the interconnection and commissioning steps that follow turbine delivery.
