MHI Compressor International to Supply Turbomachinery for Shintech's PEP-2 Ethylene Plant

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor International Corporation (MCO-I) has been selected to supply critical turbomachinery for Shintech's PEP-2 project, a new 625 KTA ethylene plant planned for Plaquemine, Louisiana, with operations expected to begin in 2030, the company said.¹

Second Shintech Award Backs VCM Integration

The new facility will produce ethylene exclusively for use within Shintech's vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) manufacturing operations, supporting the company's integrated production chain.¹ MCO-I will supply the turbomachinery equipment through the combined expertise of its MCO Hiroshima manufacturing operation in Japan and MCO-I Houston.¹

"This project represents a major milestone, as it marks the second U.S.-based plant with this end user where MCO-I has been entrusted to provide critical turbomachinery solutions for ethylene production," said Michael McCurry, manager of new unit business sales at MCO-I. Latest in a String of Gulf Coast Ethylene Contracts

The award extends MCO-I's presence along the U.S. Gulf Coast, where the company has been building out regional manufacturing and testing capacity. Its Pearland, Texas, facility added a dedicated compressor test stand capable of full-scale PTC 10 Type 2 mechanical and performance testing — the only OEM test stand of its kind in the region, according to the company, letting customers get shop-test results locally rather than waiting on facilities overseas. MCO-I has picked up a steady run of large ethylene and olefins turbomachinery contracts on both sides of the Gulf Coast in the past two years, including compressor packages for Dow's Path2Zero ethylene cracker in Alberta and for the Golden Triangle Polymers ethane cracker in Texas.

The PEP-2 award adds to that run as U.S. Gulf Coast petrochemical investment continues at a steady clip, giving turbomachinery suppliers like MCO-I a multi-year pipeline of greenfield and brownfield ethylene projects to bid into even as the broader capital-projects market stays selective.
