Ansaldo Energia supplied four advanced AE94.3A gas turbines and four generators for the Mingachevir-based plant facility.

Ansaldo Energia and officials from Azerbaijan and Italy celebrated the inauguration of the new “8th November” combined-cycle power plant in Mingachevir, Azerbaijan, marking another modernization milestone in the country’s energy infrastructure and its efforts to decarbonize and enhance efficiency.

Key Takeaways

  • Azerbaijan enhances its energy infrastructure with the new "8th November" combined-cycle power plant.
  • The plant, built with Ansaldo Energia's Italian technology, significantly reduces emissions and boosts production capacity.
  • The AE94.3A gas turbines are hydrogen-ready, supporting Azerbaijan's decarbonization goals.

"I am pleased to be back in Azerbaijan today for the inauguration of this innovative plant, completed in just two years, thanks also to the crucial contribution of Italy. Goal achieved!” said Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy. “This is the power plant with the highest production capacity in the country, built with Italian technology from Ansaldo Energia: a state-of-the-art facility that will play a key role in achieving the country’s energy goals, as well as its environmental targets, with a 50% reduction in emissions.”

His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; Adolfo Urso, Italy’s Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy; High-ranking government officials; and Fabrizio Fabbri, CEO of Ansaldo Energia, attended the inauguration.

Ansaldo Energia supplied four advanced AE94.3A gas turbines and four generators for the installation, developed by Azerenerji. The AE94.3A gas turbine is ready to burn up to 40% hydrogen in a blend with natural gas.

“We are deeply satisfied and proud to have contributed to the realization of this ambitious project, which stands at the intersection of innovation, performance, and sustainability,” said Stefano Gianatti, EVP Thermal New Units of Ansaldo Energia. “We look forward with confidence to future opportunities to further support Azerenerji and the Republic of Azerbaijan in their path toward energy security and transition.”

Ansaldo Energia also supplied the AE94.3A gas turbine to support Ireland’s grid. Ansaldo Energia and Kilshane Energy are strengthening Ireland’s electric infrastructure with a 300-MW energy security project in Kilshane, Dublin, Ireland; commissioning is set for 2028. To support the peaking plant’s operational flexibility and stabilize the grid, Ansaldo Energia will provide an AE94.3A gas turbine in an open-cycle configuration and the associated generator.

“This project is about resilience and flexibility,” said Brian McMullan, Project Lead for Kilshane Energy Ltd. “As Ireland moves toward a net-zero energy system, we need reliable backup generation to complement the growing renewable fleet. The technology from Ansaldo Energia is not only flexible and robust, but it also offers a future pathway to decarbonization, with the potential for hydrogen blending and other low-carbon fuels. Kilshane Energy is committed to supporting Ireland’s sustainable energy future, and this partnership with Ansaldo Energia reinforces its long-term strategy to deliver flexible, dependable generation as part of the national transition.”

Stefano Gianatti, Executive Vice President Thermal New Units at Ansaldo Energia, said: "The AE94.3A gas turbine continues to prove its value in today’s rapidly evolving energy landscape. With its best-in-class flexibility and reliability, it is ideally suited to support Ireland’s energy security while advancing the country’s decarbonization goals."
