The project will include the development of solutions for the production and use of carbon-free fuels, logistical support for field service operations, and specialized manufacturing activities.

Ansaldo Energia recently confirmed its involvement in the reindustrialization project for the Gioia del Colle industrial site in Apulia, Italy, with the aim of ensuring a solid, long-term industrial future for a strategic area in the national production system. The project will create a multifunctional industrial complex dedicated to the development of energy technologies. Promoted and coordinated by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, activities include:

  • Development of solutions for the production and use of carbon-free fuels
  • Logistical support for field service operations at power generation plants
  • Specialized manufacturing activities in support of the energy transition

“The Gioia del Colle project represents a coherent element of our industrial strategy,” said Fabrizio Fabbri, Chief Executive Officer of Ansaldo Energia. “It is an initiative developed in collaboration with institutions and aimed at creating new production and technological development capabilities in line with the evolution of the energy sector. A project that strengthens the Group and fits into a long-term, sustainable growth path.”

Specifically, the project includes industrial investments totaling approximately €50 million over three years to be allocated across site redevelopment, power plant upgrades, and the start-up of various activities. Around €30 million will be covered directly by Ansaldo Energia, while the remaining portion will be supported via national and local incentive schemes for reindustrialization processes.

The Ansaldo Energia Group signed a preliminary agreement with the site’s current owner, aimed at relaunching the plant through high-technology initiatives that are fully aligned with the skills and activities present within the company. The number of highly qualified employees will increase gradually in line with the expansion of the operational scope, reaching 139 units at the completion of the reindustrialization plan.

The company’s project does not specify any relocation of existing activities, either from the Group’s headquarters in Genoa or its other industrial sites. It falls under an overall growth strategy, creating new industrial capabilities and generating complementary development opportunities alongside existing work, without operational or organizational overlap.

Thisvi Power Plant

In late February 2026, Enerwave S.A., a member of HELLENiQ ENERGY, awarded Ansaldo Energia a contract to install a comprehensive gas turbine upgrade for the Thisvi combined-cycle power plant in Greece. The enhancement applies to Thisvi’s AE94.3A gas turbine, with installation planned for March 2027. It will increase power output, overall efficiency, and operational flexibility, while reducing CO2 emissions. The company also renewed its previous long-term service agreement, now providing technical support for another 14 years.

In addition to improving the plant’s power output and overall efficiency, the upgrade will reduce fuel consumption, lower operating costs, and significantly reduce CO2 emissions during operation. Also, the ramp rate will be increased, providing rapid response to grid fluctuations caused by the growing integration of intermittent renewable energy.

Birr Test Facility

In an effort to support Switzerland’s electricity security, Ansaldo Energia’s Birr test facility will operate as a strategic reserve power source during critical, high-demand winter periods. The facility, powered by a GT26 gas turbine, will enter reserve operation in February 2027 with a 250-MW power output.

The additional reserve capacity will safeguard Switzerland’s power supply until new dedicated reserve plants become fully operational in the future. Ansaldo Energia’s Birr test facility, prior to its current designation, validated advanced gas turbine technologies and drove performance, emissions, and fuel flexibility improvements.
