Ebara Elliott Energy and Doosan will integrate gas turbines and centrifugal compressors for LNG trains, targeting commercial readiness in 2028.

Ebara Elliott Energy and Doosan Enerbility signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop gas turbine-driven centrifugal compressor systems for liquefied natural gas applications.

The long-term partnership will combine Doosan’s latest advanced-frame gas turbine technology with Ebara Elliott Energy’s LNG refrigeration compressors, expanders and pumps. Joint engineering alignment and market development are beginning immediately, while Doosan’s gas turbine platform is projected to reach commercial readiness in early 2028.1

The companies finalized the agreement Aug. 20 during a signing ceremony involving Nobu Miyaki, president and CEO of Ebara Elliott Energy, and Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of Doosan Enerbility’s Power Service Business Group.

What will the LNG compressor partnership develop?

The collaboration is focused on an integrated, high-performance compression string pairing Doosan gas turbines with Ebara Elliott Energy centrifugal compressors. The companies described the planned equipment as efficient and robust, with reliability and plant availability serving as central development priorities.1

Gas turbine-driven centrifugal compressors are a core part of many LNG liquefaction configurations. The driver supplies the shaft power needed by refrigeration compressors, which circulate and compress refrigerant through the process cooling cycle. Integration between the gas turbine, compressor and auxiliary systems can therefore influence train performance, operating flexibility and availability.

The MOU’s emphasis on joint engineering alignment indicates the companies intend to coordinate development before the turbine reaches commercial readiness. For turbomachinery engineers, early alignment is important because the driver and compressor must function as a complete mechanical and process system. Engineering work can include matching power and speed requirements, evaluating operating envelopes, and coordinating control and protection philosophies.

Why does equipment integration matter for LNG operators?

LNG compressor trains are expected to operate reliably under varying ambient and process conditions. A closely engineered turbine-compressor package can help project teams address interfaces among the driver, driven equipment and supporting systems before installation and commissioning.

Miyaki said the partnership would use Ebara Elliott Energy’s LNG experience to create a technically advanced compression string offering the reliability customers require.

“This collaboration leverages our deep LNG legacy to engineer a technically leading, high-performance string that delivers the exceptional reliability our customers demand,” Miyaki said.1

Sohn said the agreement would expand Doosan’s turbine technology into LNG while creating a high-efficiency solution intended to support plant availability and long-term operator value.

What are the implications for rotating equipment teams?

The 2028 target gives LNG developers, engineering contractors and equipment specialists an early indication of when the proposed driver-compressor combination could become commercially available. In the interim, the partners’ market-development work could help define project requirements and determine where the new compression string fits within future LNG facilities.

For machinery teams, key considerations will include how the proposed package addresses train efficiency, compressor operating range, driver performance and system reliability. Maintenance organizations will also need to assess service strategies, spare-parts planning and technical support for an integrated train involving equipment from both companies.

The partnership brings together complementary roles: Doosan as the developer of the advanced-frame gas turbine and Ebara Elliott Energy as the supplier of LNG-focused centrifugal compression and related turbomachinery. Its ultimate industry impact will depend on the detailed configuration and performance of the commercial package planned for 2028.
