GE upgrades to boost plant performance

In Brazil, GE has delivered a turnkey solution including power generation, electrification and control systems to upgrade the Luiz Antonio Mesquita Integrator Port Terminal (Tiplam) at the port of Santos in São Paulo.

GE Power Conversion's scope of work included a main and a complementary substation, ten e-houses and electrical and automation systems providing power and control to the terminal. GE said some equipment was manufactured in Brazil in order to satisfy a local content requirement.

In the UK, the company has won a contract to modernize RWE’s 420 MW Great Yarmouth gas-fired power plant. GE will upgrade the gas turbine and perform major inspections of the steam turbine and generator, with replacements of key components in the steam turbine.

The upgrades also include a Dry Low NOx 2.6+ combustion system, an Advanced Gas Path solution, an Asset Performance Management digital solution, a Mark VIe integrated control system and associated gas and steam turbine generator maintenance.

In Turkey, the company is set to modernize two coal-fired plants for coal power specialist Yeniköy Kemerköy Elektrik Üretim ve Ticaret AŞ. Together, the two plants meet around 5 per cent of Turkey’s energy demand.

The upgrade is expected to increase the plants’ capacity by 197.5 MW, boost efficiency from 34 per cent to up to 40 per cent, and decrease emissions.

GE said the scope of work will include replacing five Zamech high-pressure, intermediate-pressure and low-pressure steam turbines and five Dolmel generators with air-cooled generators. The company will also upgrade five Rafako boilers, modernize five flue-gas desulphurization and electrostatic precipitator systems as well as the electrical and mechanical balance of plant, and will install a distributed control system.
