Siemens H class turbines to power Petronas project in Malaysia

Siemens, in a consortium with MMC Engineering Services Sdn Bhd (MMCES) of Malaysia, has received an order for the turnkey construction of the Pengerang Co-generation Plant (PCP) in Malaysia. The order comes from Malaysia's state-owned petroleum corporation, Petronas.

The PCP is expected to produce approximately 1,220 MW of power and up to 1,480 tons per hour of steam for the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), Petronas' mega development in Pengerang, Southern Johor.

Siemens will undertake the turnkey construction of the PCP, said to be one of the most efficient gas-fired power plants that comprises four co-generation units along with a long-term maintenance and services contract. Each unit comes with an H class gas turbine, a waste-heat recovery steam generator, a steam turbine, associated mechanical and electrical systems and the instrumentation and control system.

Roland Fischer, CEO of Siemens Energy's Power Generation Division, said the company’s H class technology has been successful in commercial operation. “Nine of these turbines are being used commercially with excellent results for generating power reliably, economically and with low impact on the environment.”

"With the PCP, Petronas will not only be supplying reliable steam and power to petrochemicals plant and other facilities in PIC, but we will also be able to supply to the Malaysian grid in an  environmentally-friendly manner,” said Petronas’ Vice President Infrastructure & Utilities, Pramod Kumar Karunakaran.

PCP's first co-generation unit, expected to go online by mid-2017, is likely to supply power to the national grid for public consumption. The remaining co-generation units will supply to PIC's facilities.
